Blending blockchain and painting techniques the new ‘UNITY’ Series is a fusion of the first two historic series ‘Solidity’ & ‘Materiality’ by Gordon Berger from 2018/2019.
The historic importance of these series comes from the fact that they are a part of the first smart-contract enabled generative art project on the blockchain as well as the first NFTs to ever be materialized from the digital world into physical reality.
This new series, ‘UNITY’ consists of 88 unique artworks which are generated using an algorithm and data from the blockchain; exploring concepts of trust, control, and collaboration in our evolving Web3 world. Code and smart-contracts become an extension the creative expression rather than just a tool and explore the mixed-reality condition we are experiencing between the physical and virtual reality.
The title ‘Unity’ comes from the unification of all the digitally handmade brushstrokes used in the previous series. The ones which are silver were originally used to create, the previous series, ‘Materiality’ & the colorful brushstrokes were used to generate ‘Solidity’ the first series.
These artworks highlight what it means to be human in this important moment of cultural and technological transformation through abstract art. Each series marks an important moment in the evolution of Crypto Art:
-The 1st series, ‘Solidity’ deals with concepts that were very innovative in 2018/19 like for example: digital scarcity, ownership of digital assets, and value in the virtual world.
-The 2nd series ‘Materiality’ deals with the intersection between the physical and digital world & also how something digital can be materialized through different physical mediums and techniques.
-And the 3rd series ‘UNITY’ was tokenized at the end of 2021 and reflects what was happening in the space at the time.
This series consists of digitally-native artworks, which is a manifestation of many concepts explored in ‘Solidity’ that resulted in the recent rise of NFT adoption. It also deals with the concept of building a community through a series of NFTs and rewarding participants.
In this case collectors that have a NFT from the ‘UNITY’ series, form a part of a special group, that owns a gateway for future ‘air-drops’ and surprises from the artist.
Each NFT also has unique associated physical artworks that will be sent (‘air-dropped’) to the collectors.
Redefining and exploring the artist-to-collector relationship in this new ecosystem.
Two unique physical artworks are associated with each ‘UNITY’ NFT and will be sent to the collectors. These pieces through the medium, process and materials used in the creation conceptually represent the two realities through which we are simultaneously living and experiencing the world.
1. Tactile/Physical: Unique material artwork created and signed by the hand of the artist as eighter a drawing or painting on paper or canvas. Inspired by the specific ‘UNITY’ NFT that the collector holds.
2. Immaterial/Digital: Holographic physical manifestation of the UNITY artwork using lenticular printing technology which creates an illusion of 3D on a flat surface, much like the screens we interact with on our everyday basis. (Signed and numbered on the back by the artist)
